Learn more

Louis Moinet is today an independent watch brand located in Saint-Blaise, Switzerland, specialising in the creation of high-end timepieces, often featuring exotic materials and innovative technology, underpinned by the philosophy of limited edition mechanical art.
All of Louis Moinet’s timepieces are either exclusive limited editions or unique pieces.

Uniqueness, Creative Horology, Exclusivity and Art & Design are at the heart of Louis Moinet creations.

The fully independent firm was established to honour the memory of Louis Moinet (1768-1853): master watchmaker, inventor of the chronograph and high frequency (216,000 vibrations per hour) (certified by two Guinness World Records™). Louis Moinet was a watchmaker, artist and astronomer. He is the author of the Traité d’Horlogerie, a watchmaking treatise published in 1848 that remained a definitive work of reference for a century.
Today, Ateliers Louis Moinet is perpetuating this legacy.

BIRTH OF LOUIS MOINET
1768

Louis Moinet was born in Bourges in 1768. During his studies, he quickly distinguished himself by his mastery of classical subjects, and he regularly took first place in academic competitions.

While still a child, he developed a passion for watchmaking and spent all his free time with a masterwatchmaker. An Italian painter also gave him private drawing lessons.

Watchmaking occupied his entire time from 1800 onwards. He spent long periods in Switzerland, from the Jura mountains to the Joux valley. He met many famous watchmakers there, including Jacques-Frédéric Houriet, and acquired his horological tools and instruments.

A REFERENCE IN HAUTE HORLOGERIE
1800

Louis Moinet worked closely with the great Abraham-Louis Breguet, over a period of many years, acting in the capacity of close friend, confidant and intimate advisor. The two men shared the same passion for the art of horology.

Louis Moinet wins a new Guinness World Record™️
2020

This new Guinness World Records™ title is awarded to Louis Moinet, who revolutionised watchmaking in 1816. Not only did he invent the first chronograph (certified by Guinness World Records in 2016) but also high frequency, duly recognised by a new Guinness World Records title in 2020. This “first high-frequency stopwatch” award for his Compteur de Tierces made in 1816 definitively places Louis Moinet in the circle of the world’s most avant-garde watchmakers.
